History & Mission

Phase One of the Food Fort, a food truck and cart commissary, was launched in July of 2011 with two goals in mind:

  • Creating jobs by working to assist our clients in growing their businesses, and
  • Generating enough revenue to make the Food Fort model a self-sustaining entity.

Phase Two of the Food Fort, a commercial kitchen and bakery, launched in July of 2012 after twelve months of planning and construction. The kitchen and bakery follow a business incubator model by supporting new businesses and helping existing food based businesses, caterers and bakers expand their companies.

Our parent organization is the Economic and Community Development Institute.  Its mission is to invest in people to create measurable and enduring social and economic change. Since its inception in 2004, the Institute’s programs and services have grown into a comprehensive suite of programming designed to lead low-income Ohioans out of poverty.  Program participants are given the training, tools, and assistance they need to earn living wage incomes in the short term and purchase and maintain assets for the future.  ECDI is the only U.S. Small Business Administration intermediary microlender serving all counties in Ohio.
